Jaimee Saumier is a Kid with Class!

Seaway News - - NEWS -

An environmentalist with class! Jaimee Saumier is a student in grade 5 immersion at Eamer’s Corners Public School. She is a very active young lady. She loves to read almost as much as she loves to write. The stories she writes are captivating and she seems to have an endless number of scenarios available to write about. Her imagination is bountiful and often leaves those around her speechless. She is strong-willed, which enables her to get the job done.

Jaimee is creative with her hands and spends much of her time making all sorts of things from different materials from around the house and the classroom. Like the true environmentalist that she is, re-using is very important to her. Jaimee has been a member of the Green Team at Eamer's for the last two years. This year she has taken on the responsibility of leading the composting program. Jaimee has dug into this job with both hands. Early in September she catalogued the resources and ordered the required materials. When the materials arrived she sorted and set up 5 composting bins. Since then, she has taught her team of up to 7 how to care for the worm habitats so that the creatures effectively recycle our organics. She has set up duty schedules, supervised her team, and problem solved several incidents over the year. Her leadership has been so effective that aside from some routine checks, the staff leader has had little to do this year.

Recently, when challenged to spread the word about recycling through composting, Jaimee and a friend made worm puppets and did a presentation for kindergarten students. The environment and the animals in it are important to Jaimee. Her leadership and enthusiasm has helped others see the importance of conserving resources and caring for the world around us. Jaimee is not only a Kid with Class, but has led kids with class. As an Eagle Wing, a group of grade 5 and 6 students who meet regularly to discuss global issues and fundraise to support various charities and foundations, Jaimee has been instrumental in this year’s campaigns. She enthusiastically read announcements over the P.A. system and visited classrooms to promote their many projects, such as fundraising for the UCDSB Champions for Kids Foundation. During the Cornwall Family of Schools’ Drive for 5 campaign, which raised funds for Haiti relief, Children’s Treatment Centre and the Wish Foundation, Jaimee handmade pretty pins and sold them in her neighbourhood and to classmates to raise money. She also spearheaded a project to raise funds to buy mosquito nets for children in Zambia after she heard about the millions of children who die in Africa from Malaria and how this tragedy can be prevented through the use of nets.

Jaimee has a special place in the hearts of staff at ECPS. She is an integral part of the school community. They are lucky to have such a dedicated student, environmentalist and global activist amongst their students and are wonderfully pleased that she is leading by example.
