June 11 marked the opening date of the Champions for Kids Juried Art Show at the Cornwall Public Library, the first of two events that will comprise the Celebration of Arts. Thirty-one Cornwall and area high school students from the Upper Canada District School Board entered the competition. Thanks to the generous donations of several local businesses, all of the artwork was framed by Logan’s Gallery, adding to the professional ambiance of the exhibit and making it well worth the visit. Three members of the Focus Art Association, Pat Campbell, Jacqueline Milner and Sandra Taylor, formed the jury and had the challenging task of choosing the top ten pieces.

The winning artists have graciously donated their work to be auctioned off at a celebration dinner, with all proceeds going to the Champions for Kids Foundation, the charitable arm of the Upper Canada District School Board. The Foundation was formed in January 2008 to help level the playing field for children of struggling families. It gives them a helping hand to financially meet their children’s medical needs and allow their kids to participate in sporting events, the arts and other fun activities outside of school hours. To date, close to a quarter of a million dollars has been disbursed by the Foundation for things such as hockey registration, guitar lessons, eye glasses, epi-pens and hospital transportation expenses. The celebration dinner will take place on June 25 at the Ramada Inn and Conference Centre. To sponsor this event, or purchase tickets to the celebration dinner, please call Eamer’s Corners Public School at 613-933-0644.
