CORNWALL, Ontario – Operation Red Nose ( ORN), the free ride program that takes drivers, passengers and vehicles home in December, kicked off to a strong start on its opening weekend.

Lee Theodore, ORN chair, described the first night of opeation as a brand new kind of success.

“Our volunteer base is changing. Our call for volunteers was well- received and it shows in the amount of fun, safe rides and money we raised this weekend,” said Theodore.

On Dec. 6 and 7, 54 ORN volunteers got behind the wheel so people who had a few too many didn’t have to. A total of 56 vehicles made it home safely thanks to the holiday service.

“Weekend one is a success with total ride donations just breaching the $ 1000 mark,” he said.

If you want a lift home from ORN there is one catch - you must have a vehicle. If you’re on foot patrol, Theodore is encouraging you to call a local taxi service instead.

ORN operates well into the night and as bars are closing their doors, volunteers are already in motion.

“It’s amazing to see random people coming together, contributing positive energy all night and being on teams when hours prior they were unknown to each other,” he said.

ORN volunteers are asked to use their own vehicles. A reimbursement process is available. Since driving is done in teams of three, the responsibility gets shared between automobiles.
