Drive Clean getting cheaper by $5- BIG DEAL!
Dear editor: Ontario is lowering the fee motorists pay for a Drive Clean emission test by $5.
I say get rid of the Drive Clean program all together, it’s another tax grab.
There are so many flaws in this program it’s ridiculous.
For instance, Drive Clean doesn’t even apply to all light – duty vehicles on the road, if your vehicle was built before 1988 you are exempt.
Northern Ontario and the Counties of Huron, Bruce and Grey are exempt as well.
Drive Clean gives breaks to some of the worst polluting cars on the road. Vehicles are not required to incur any costs if the repair estimate exceeds $ 450. There were 8000 clunkers avoided being fully repaired in 2011.
The testing itself has had many failures, creating added costs to drivers.
There has been a 75% reduction in vehicle emissions (since 1999 when Drive Clean was launched) because of better manufacturing standards for emission-control equipment and federal requirements for cleaner fuel.
In February of 2014 municipalities across Ontario have the Roma/ Good Roads conference. This is one topic I plan on bringing up to our provincial ministers. Let’s see what kind of bogus explanation I get back.
Stop the Drive Clean program altogether and get back to focusing on the real problems of Ontario, the economy.
