Vets go perfect in preseason
The Woodstock Navy Vets finish their exhibition schedule with a 6-0 record, with their home opener Friday against Wellesley
VETS END PERFECT PRESEASON
The Woodstock Navy Vets wrapped up their exhibition schedule with a 4-1 victory over the Aylmer Spitfires to finish with a 6-0 record.
Woodstock opened the scoring against Aylmer with Kyle Walker and Austin Richardson getting first period goals. Troy Vandenbussche scored in the second and Richardson notched his second of the game late in the third to complete the 4-1 win. Both Richardson and Walker had three point games as Keaghan Brett and Mike Harrison combined for 12 shots in the win. Woodstock had 47 shots on net.
Walker finished the exhibition schedule with a team leading 12 points and Warren Gorman and Chris Jensen were second with seven points each.
Woodstock starts their regular season with their annual free home opener Friday at 7:45 p.m. against the Wellesley Applejacks. They travel to Norwich to play the Merchants Saturday.
MERCHANTS COMPLETE EXHIBITION SCHEDULE
The Norwich Merchants finished the preseason with a 3-3 record following a 4-2 loss to the Hagersville Hawks Friday and 3-0 win versus Hagersville Saturday.
Norwich started the Friday game with two first period goals from Blake Pow and Jesse Funn, but the Hawks scored once in the second and three more in the third for the win. Tyler Gubesch had 22 saves in net.
Norwich opens their season Saturday night at home against the Woodstock Navy Vets at 7:30 p.m.
TAVISTOCK END PRESEASON 3-1
The Tavistock Braves completed a successful exhibition schedule with a 5-3 win over the Dorchester Dolphins Friday.
The win comes after the started with a 5-2 loss to the Aylmer Spitfires with a 5-2 win over the Kincardine Bulldogs and 5-3 against the Dolphins.
In their Friday win, Tavistock had goals from Jared Yantzi, Jake Wiffen, Matt Gauther, Cole Corriveau and Derek Hyde with Jensen VanBoekel making 30 saves for the win.
Corriveau ended the preseason with a team leading six points as Zac Berg, Hyde and Tayler Trachsel each had four points.
Tavistock begin their regular season against the defending Schmalz Cup champion Ayr Centennials at home Friday at 7:30 p.m. then visit the Burford Bulldogs Saturday.
TROJANS START EXHIBITION 1-2
The Thamesford Trojans opened their preseason with a 4-1 loss to the Mount Brydges Bulldogs followed by a 6-1 win over the Lucan Irish and a 7-5 loss to the Bulldogs last weekend.
In the Trojans 4-1 loss to Mount Brydges, Chris Dimmers had the lone goal as they outshot Mount Brydges 43-30.
Thamesford came back with a 6-1 win against Lucan Friday with Jorden Winters scoring twice and Spencer Mills, Josh Moore, Garrett Hickey and Colby Doxtator adding goals. The Trojans outshot Lucan 43-29, with Mitch Vanendhoven and Tyler Hildebrant combining for the win in net.
The Trojans finished the weekend with a 7-5 loss after Mount Brydges scored three times in the third to win. Thamesford had two goals from Colby Doxtator and individual goals from Cody Tremblay, Chris Dimmers and Cody Cierc.
Thamesford’s last exhibition game is tonight at home at 7:30 against the Lucan Irish.
They open their regular season Friday at home against the North Middlesex Stars at 7:30 p.m. then visit the Aylmer Spitfires Saturday and Mount Brydges Sunday.
HURRICANES OPEN WITH WIN
The Tillsonburg Hurricanes of the Greater Metro Junior Hockey League began their season with a 10-3 victory over the Tottenham Steam.
Tillsonburg next plays the North York Renegades Sept. 17.
