London lands coveted Ikea store

Sentinel-Review (Woodstock) - - NEWS - JANE SIMS

LONDON — Get out your Allen keys — a full-sized Ikea store is coming to London.

The big-box retailer, famed for its easy-to-assemble furniture and popular catalogue, said Thursday it’s opening a large store at Highway 401 and Wellington Road in 2019.

The move is an upgrade for London, a city where Ikea opened a pickup depot on Wonderland Road last year, but which until now hadn’t made the cut for a regular Ikea store, forcing its fans to drive long distances to larger centres.

Swedish-based Ikea said the 270,000-square-foot London store will take 14 to 16 months to build. Construction will start next summer and the store is scheduled to open in fall 2019.

The store will employ 100 to 150 people in addition to those already working at the pickup depot.

Features will include a showroom, market hall, restaurant and children’s play facility.

Rooftop solar energy panels, LED lighting and a commitment to divert waste from the landfill will be among the store’s green features, the company said.

Ikea also will conduct “home visits” during its planning for the store, part of a marketing strategy to interview customers about the products they desire.

The London store will be Ikea’s 15th in Canada.
