Festive season returns to Friendly City
Santa Claus parade, lighting of lights in Museum Square marks the beginning of the Yuletide season in Woodstock
It’s the most wonderful time of the year.
The Christmas spirit returns to the Friendly City this weekend with the bright lights, sights and sounds of the annual nighttime Santa Claus Parade.
The event, beginning Saturday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m., and heading west down Dundas Street, will mark the official start of the Christmas season in Downtown Woodstock.
“This weekend is always such a fun and festive time here in downtown Woodstock,” said Kelly Morrison, manager of the Downtown Woodstock BIA.
“It’s the kickoff weekend to the holiday season. The Christmas decorations are all up, the merchants have their businesses all decorated, and it’s the popular Ding Dong The Tax is Gone.”
This year’s parade includes 75 entries with nine bands, featuring The North Star Youth Band and Impact Percussion for the very first time.
“The parade committee has been meeting year-round preparing
Kelly Morrison, manager of the Downtown Woodstock BIA
and planning for this parade, and we can’t wait to show it off to the community,” Morrison said.
Produced at a cost of $22,000, donations for the parade will be collected by bucket brigade volunteers from the Oxford Rotary Club.
“While the parade is fortunate to have some solid sponsors, the dollars collected during the parade are critical to its ongoing success,” said parade chair Terry Chisholm.
During the parade, Canada Post will be collecting children’s letter to Santa for delivery to the North Pole.
Parade-goers will also have the opportunity to donate non-perishable food items and unwrapped toys to the Salvation Army.
On Friday the annual lighting event at Museum Square, featuring live entertainment, begins at 6:30 p.m.
