Luxury perfume and cosmetic house Lancôme Paris celebrated its 80th anniversary this year, on February 20th 2015. The big birthday was celebrated through social media, with the release of the house’s first ever artistic short film describing the vision and love of French elegance that has inspired the company since its inception. The surrealist Lancôme film “Ceci n’est pas une rose” directed by Thomas Tyman projects through pop-up images the exceptional wonders of the company and its quest to enrich women’s lives through the power of beauty and happiness.

Françoise Lehmann, Lancôme’s General Manager, says: “Above all, we wanted this celebration to be a moment of joy—for Lancôme — beauty goes hand in hand with happiness.” The celebration theme this year is “la vie est belle,” to enjoy the beautiful life! The brand will be promoting its products and campaigns to remind consumers why women’s lives are more beautiful with Lancôme.

Today Lancôme represents the ultra-feminine, emotion, joie-de-vivre, happiness and beauty. The company’s mantra is that every woman should feel beautiful and always leave happy after using their products. The brand has been rated #1 by offering unique skin care, make-up and perfume in over 130 countries.

SHE Canada helps celebrate Lancôme’s eight decades of beauty, scientific innovation, exceptional fragrances, skincare and make-up products by reflecting on the company’s incredible journey. The French brand was originally founded as a fragrance house in 1935 by Armand Petitjean. The name Lancôme and the single gold rose were inspired from the ruins of the castle, Le Château de Lancosme, and its surrounding floral environment.

The first products to be launched by the company in 1935 at the World’s Fair in Brussels were the five fragrances: Tendre Nuit, Bocages, Conquète, Kypre and Tropiques. In 1936, Petitjean unveiled his “all-purpose repair cream” to the luxury skincare market. His vision quickly grew to make-up, cosmetics and skin care products. In 1964, Lancôme was purchased by l’oréal whereby it flourished in the luxury products division.

The brand’s emphasis has always been positive beauty and it demonstrates this awareness by having charismatic and accomplished women serve as its ambassadors. Beautiful women who love life and are full of energy and talent, like Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Penélope Cruz, Emma Watson, and Lupita Nyong’o have graced the brand’s campaigns as radiant icons.
