Canada's Polansky and Abanda advance to second round of US Open qualifying

anada's Peter Polansky and Francoise Abanda posted first-round victories Wednesday at the US Open qualifying tournament. Polansky, from Thornhill, Ont., defeated Russia's Konstantin Kravchuk 6-3, 7-6 (5) and Abanda, from Montreal, topped Alexandra Panova of Russia 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (4).

Toronto's Brayden Schnur dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 decision to American Mitchell Krueger. Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., was scheduled to play Italy's Luca Vanni later Wednesday.

Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Montreal's Felix Auger-aliassime won their opening matches Tuesday. Shapovalov was scheduled to play Gastao Elias of Portugal on Thursday while Auger-aliassime was to meet Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine.

The 69th-ranked Shapovalov is seeded second in the qualifying draw after his breakout performanc­e at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. The 18-year-old defeated Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro en route to a semifinal appearance.

Qualifying play continues through Friday. Main draw action begins Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
