Six citizens honoured for ’Canadian character’
Virgo earns red beer fridge
Saugeen Shores residents Jeff Virgo - a canadian Veteran wounded on duty - is the proud owner of a shiny red Molson canadian beer fridge after being selected as one of 150 canadians in a canada 150th birthday “a taste of Who We are” campaign celebrating canadian character.
Virgo, involved with the Saugeen track & Field club, minor soccer, the town of Saugeen Shores, and recently as an ambassador at the invictus games, received the iconic fridge and a souvenir wooden Molson crate, oct. 3 during celebrations at the Southampton fire hall. Five other local nominees were also honoured with crates that included beer glasses, an opener, coasters and sixpack of beer.
Molson received thousands of nominations for its “a taste of Who We are” campaign, each with a story of someone acting with canadian character, like the quiet humbleness Virgo displayed as he accepted his award.
For Virgo, being a proud canuck includes: “Be a part of your community - even if it’s something small - just helping one another out maybe helping an organization out. Just being proud of who you are and being proud of where you’re from and being a proud canadian,” he said as he accepted the honour.
There were 1,500 crates distributed across canada to recognize people who added something to their communities. the local recipients included:
Joyce Johnston: a “heritage super star” and member of the town’s Municipal heritage committee tasked with preserving and protecting the rich heritage and history of this area
Stan Kollontay: a volunteer firefighter and paramedic in Saugeen Shores who is a recreation booster
doug huber: the former Southampton Fire chief, a community advocate, sportsman and former town councillor
John Weichel: an “outstanding” local maritime historian/author
dan russell: The “educator extraordinare” was honoured as the Principal of G.C. Huston school in Southampton.
