Shoreline Beacon - - News - Frances Learment Editor

Many of the staff of seven Bruce-Grey RE/MAX Land Exchange offices, including two in Saugeen Shores, will pedal to help raise money for local health care this summer as their employer committed to a $10,000 donation, and Platinum sponsor status, for the 70K bike ride at the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF)’s Gran Fondo (Italian for Bike Bike) Lake Huron fundraiser in August.

RE/MAX Broker of Record Renate Sieber-Schlegel and many of her staff gathered with SMHF officials on the side lawn at Saugeen Memorial Hospital Nov. 2 for a ceremonial cheque presentation.

She said support for the SMHS’s Gran Fondo is important as good healthcare close to home is valued by their clients.

“Every year we give a donation to a local cause and (broker ) Scott Saunders brought this idea to me, and we thought it would be a good thing to support this hospital campaign,” Sieber-Schlegel said.

Saunders said RE/MAX is proud to play a role in the community with the fundraiser.

“We believe that helping the Gran Fondo and the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation is an incredible thing to do to give back to the community that has been so generous to us,” Saunders said, adding he intends to ride in the August event.

For SMHF Executive Director Sally Kidson, RE/ MAX becoming a Platinum sponsor is encouraging the fund-raising goal for the Gran Fondo is $150,000.

“We have one confirmed Bronze ($,1000) sponsor, one Silver ($2,500), and we have a potential Gold Sponsor and others kind of in the wings,” Kidson said after the cheque presentation, declining to names at this point, but hinting of announcements of additional sponsors incoming weeks.

To date, there are 39 confirmed Gran Fondo registrations - they hope to hit 75 by Christmas - for the four events that include 30, 70, 110, and 160K routes through Saugeen Shores and surrounding area that could draw 1,500 riders.

The premiere Gran Fondo event is 160k Bruce County Bucket List - many notable stops throughout southwestern Bruce County as it takes riders through Sauble Beach, Tara, Port Elgin, Tiverton and Paisley. The easiest ride is the 30k — From Farm to Shore and Back — that begins with a loop through Southampton, then along the shoreline to Port Elgin and an inland ride along the Saugeen River and back to Southampton. There are prizes for the top three individual fundraisers and the top three fundraising teams.
