Team wins Hockey on the Hill Contest
the Ziegler castle lumber Saugeen Shores Peewee hl girls’ Storm team will play at canada rink 150 on Parliament hill, representing the Southern ontario region, after winning a hockey on the hill contest, part of the Bell capital cup canada 150 division.
The Storm - one of 16 Peewee boys and 16 house league Peewee girls teams - will represent Southern ontario at this year’s Bell capital cup hockey tournament in a special canada 150 division.
along with a youtube video showcasing the team, the contest required an essay. instead of an essay, Peewee Storm coach Bryan tedford wrote and submitted a poem.
in a nov. 28 telephone interview tedford said that the poem may have given the Storm an edge in the contest.
tedford said he was “thrilled” to get the call last week from the tournament organizers confirming their win, and quickly sent an email to all the players.
“We have’t had a team meeting yet, but i imagine they are as excited as i am,” tedford said, acknowledging the Ziegler castle lumber Peewee Storm team has “not had a great season with wins and losses, but they are learning.”
The prize package includes round-trip travel to/from ottawa; listing of each team on the hockey canada roster; transportation while in ottawa-gatineau; a guaranteed a minimum of three tournament games, with a minimum of one game played on the canada 150 rink on Parliament hill; and a commemorative set of canada 150-oihF Jerseys.
here is the Storm’s winning submission: The Saugeen Shores hockey Poem We are a hockey team from Saugeen Shores, We play Peewee house league girls. hockey is the sport we love to play,
Whenever we play hockey it’s a great day. Proud canadians we very much are, hoping to meet canadian teams from afar.
Playing in the ottawa international hockey Festival we hope to do,
chosen to represent southern ontario region would be so cool too.
our team from Saugeen Shores is called the Storm,
With lots of practice we will be in good form.
our player of the game wears a bright orange vest,
it doesn’t matter if we win having fun is what’s best.
The sound the skate blades make as we carve the ice,
gives us a thrill each time it sounds so nice.
Passes, wrists shots, slap shots we can do much more,
if the coach would let us we would play until our feet were sore.
hockey is the favourite sport in this country we love,
We can’t imagine any sport that will ever rise above.
canada is one hundred and fifty years old this year,
The country is getting better with age it is clear.
the country and the players are not perfect it is true,
Working hard to improve is what we are striving to do.
Playing a hockey game on parliament hill,
to be honest would be an absolute thrill.
