Track and field kicks into gear

Seven South­west high school track and field teams were in Moose Jaw on Satur­day for the 2009 Moose Jaw In­vi­ta­tional with the Swift Cur­rent Com­pre­hen­sive High School post­ing the South­west’s top over­all fin­ish.

The Comp. fin­ished third in both the male and fe­male team events for a third over­all fin­ish in the meet. Shau­navon fol­lowed in fifth spot with Maple Creek two spots be­hind in sev­enth. Pon­tiex and Her­bert placed 12th and 13th re­spec­tively, while Gull Lake and Kyle tied for 16th.

Swift Cur­rent’s Me­gan Rumpel, com­pet­ing in the midget girls divi­sion, cap­tured first-place fin­ishes in the 80 me­tre hur­dles, long jump, triple jump and high jump. The grade 10 ath­lete also set a new meet high jump record clear­ing 1.60 me­tres.

Also in midget girls action Mor­gan Speiss of Swift Cur­rent topped the dis­cus and javelin events with throws of 23.87 me­tres and 23.06 me­tres re­spec­tively.

The Swift Cur­rent Comp. midget girls 4x100 m re­lay team also placed first in 55.71 sec­onds.

In the ju­nior girls cat­e­gory Shau­navon’s Sierra Be­nesh earned first-place fin­ishes in the 200 me­tre, 400 me­tre, and the javelin with a 28.83 me­tre throw.

Her­bert’s Brit­tany Mathies also placed first in the ju­nior girls high jump, clear­ing 1.47 me­tres.

In se­nior boys action Maple Creek’s Joshua Sch­nei­der topped three events in­clud­ing a 12.25 me­tre ef­fort in the triple jump as well as long jump and 100 me­tre ti­tles.

Shauan­von’s Cody Peskle­way also topped the se­nior boys 200 me­tre race in 24.68 sec­onds while Kyle’s Derek Ar­gue toped the javelin with a 46.39 me­tre heave.
