Retzlaff represts the Southwest at Senior Bowl
Gull Lake’s Travis Retzlaff was the only Southwest participant in the 2009 Senior Bowl on Monday in Regina. The 6’3’’, 251 lb Retzlaff was one of seven offensive linemen on the South roster as they rolled to a 33-13 win over the North.
It was a welcome conclusion to the grade 12 student’s high school football career after enduring an 0-6 season with the Gull Lake Lions nine-man football team last fall.
“It was definitely a new experience for me, going from nine-man football to 12-man is a little bit different,” said Retzlaff. “I learned a lot because I am usually a defensive guy so I had lots of learning to do. But I learned a lot and it was sweet to be out there with all those guys.”
Retzlaff was selected for the 45-man South roster after participating in a tryout camp.
He was also only one of 13 players named to the squad from outside of Regina.
“It was pretty cool because the teams are mostly made up of those city guys and I am not used to coverage like that.”
“I was in fairly often, not as much as I would have liked, but I can’t complain because there was lots of guys to play,” explained Retzlaff of his time on the field Monday. “It was fun and definitely worth the experience. I think I did fairly well being new to the whole 12-man part.”
As for his future Retzlaff recently attended Saskatoon Hilltops camp but injured his knee halfway through the camp and is unsure whether junior football will be in his future.
