Colts basketball team .500 after two tournaments

The Swift Current Comp. Senior Colts basketball team was on the road over the weekend for the Weyburn Comprehensive Christmas Classic.

The Colts won their opening game at the eightteam event before losing the next two games to finish fourth overall during their second tournament of the season. The Colts had opened their season with a second-place finish in Moose Jaw one week earlier.

The Colts opened their tournament in Weyburn with an 86-66 win over Moose Jaw Vanier.

“With a mix of experience on the court this season, our first quarter of play tends to set us back until our players can shake their anxieties,” said firstyear head coach Andrew Judge.

“Overall, a great turnaround by the second half with terrific leadership by Marcus Mayall, Jordan Bloom, and Matt Bissonnette on and off the court.”

They faced the hometown squad in the semifinal and lost 99-65. 6’4’’ forward Jordan Bloom led the Colts with 18 points and 5’8’’ guard Jordan Braun added 11 points.

“Weyburn is a strong team with a lot of talent, but so are we,” said Judge. “This is our second loss to Weyburn so far this season, as we lost to them in the finals at our first tournament.

With more experience on the court this season, and some development of our offenses, we look forward to facing Weyburn again. Veteran players, such as Marcus Mayall, Jordan Bloom, Joshua Braun and Jordan Braun, and first year senior players, such as Kristian Lubi and Brent Kerslake, kept this game fast-paced and competitive.”

The Colts concluded the tournament with an 82-65 loss to Melfort in the bronze medal game. Bloom paced the Colts again with 23 points and Jordan Braun added 10 points.

“We started off this game at a great pace, but it came down to straight shooting percentages,” explained Judge. “Our Colts kept the defense inside strong with great rebounding by Jordan Bloom and Tanner Williams, but Melfort’s outside shooting put them quickly ahead by the end of the first quarter.”

The Colts finished the first portion of their season with three wins and three losses with six tournaments ahead of them in 2014 before the SHSAA provincial playoffs begin.

The Colts’ next action will be the Central Collegiate Invitational Tournament on January 10-11 when they open the tournament against the Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders, the defending 4A provincial champions.
