Smith rep­re­sent­ing Canada in Italy

Jenna Smith’s de­but in a Team Canada uni­form was off to an out­stand­ing start last week at the 26th Win­ter Univer­si­ade in Trentino, Italy.

The Swift Cur­rent na­tive is a mem­ber of Canada’s wom­ens’ hockey team in Italy. Canada opened the tour­na­ment with a 21-0 win over Spain af­ter fir­ing 80 shots on goal. Smith had a goal and an as­sist in the win.

Canada fol­lowed up with a 5-0 win over Rus­sia on Thurs­day, out­shoot­ing them 56-10. They were even more dom­i­nant the fol­low­ing day in a 13-0 win over Great Bri­tain. Canada out­shot their op­po­nents 94-1 as Ni­cole Jack­son made 81 saves for Great Bri­tain. Smith scored two goals and added one as­sist as she fired nine shots on goal and fin- ished plus-five in the blowout win. Sun­day, Canada im­proved to 4-0 with a 6-0 win over the United States. Smith had her best game on Mon­day when she reg­is­tered four as­sists in a 9-1 win over Ja­pan to con­clude the pre­lim­i­nary round. The semi-fi­nals were to be played Wed­nes­day and the gold medal game will be played Fri­day at Palaghi­ac­cio Pergine Val­sug­ana.

Smith is cur­rently in her fourth sea­son with the Univer­sity of Cal­gary Di­nos. She is tied for sec­ond in team scor­ing with three goals and three as­sists and a plusthree rat­ing in 16 games this sea­son. The Di­nos have bat­tled their way to a 7-8-1 start in Canada West play. They will re­sume their sea­son on Jan­uary 3-4 when they host the UBC Thun­der­birds.
