Sauder leads the way through windy Dis­trict meet

Ath­letes from across the South­west con­verged in Swift Cur­rent Wed­nes­day and bat­tled their way through windy con­di­tions at the SHSAA Dis­trict track and field meet. The ath­letes in the Mid­get, Ju­nior, and Se­nior di­vi­sions were chas­ing top-two fin­ishes in each event to qual­ify for provin­cials.

Swift Cur­rent Comp. Ar­dens sopho­more Kalea Sauder led the meet with two record-break­ing ef­forts and won four events in Ju­nior Girls as she fin­ished as the only com­peti­tor with 40 points to lead the ag­gre­gate stand­ings. Sauder set her first record in the 80 Me­tre Hur­dles in 12.05 sec­onds to erase the pre­vi­ous mark of 12.62 sec­onds. She added a sec­ond record in the 100 Me­tre Dash in 12.80 sec­onds to trim the record down from 12.90 sec­onds.

There were a to­tal of seven records bro­ken by ath­letes from five dif­fer­ent schools. Maple Creek’s Michael Mudin­gayi also broke the 100 Me­tre Dash record in Ju­nior Boys in 11.42 sec­onds, just edg­ing the pre­vi­ous mark of 11.46 sec­onds.

Swift Cur­rent’s Scott Joseph added a record for the Colts in the Mid­get Boys Triple Jump with a 12.39-me­tre ef­fort to bet­ter the for­mer mark of 12.15 me­tres.

Hodgeville’s Ti­lynn Peter­son added over half a me­tre to the Mid­get Girls Shot Put mark of 9.87 me­tres when her best ef­fort trav­elled 10.48 me­tres.

Shau­navon’s Bry­den Tre­mere set a Ban­tam Boys Triple Jump record of 9.30 me­tres to erase the pre­vi­ous mark of 8.88 me­tres.

Fron­tier’s Myra Hal­der­man set the fi­nal record in Ban­tam Girls Shot Put with a 9.19-me­tres toss to sail past the pre­vi­ous record of 9.03 me­tres.

Swift Cur­rent ath­letes won five of the six ag­gre­gate ti­tles they com­peted in on their home track. Ash­ley Macdon­ald topped Mid­get Girls with 38 points, while Joseph to­taled 38 points to win Mid­get Boys. Mikayla Swal­low tied for top spot in Se­nior Girls with Shau­navon’s Kort­lyn Fuller with 38 points apiece, while Lo­gan Fritzke won Se­nior Boys with 30 points. Shau­navon’s Ryker Lar­son earned 34 points to lead all Ju­nior Boys at the meet.

Hal­der­man topped Ban­tam Girls with 30 points, while O.M. Ir­win’s Rhett Vavra won the Ban­tam Boys Di­vi­sion with 36 points.

The SHSAA Pro­vin­cial Track and

Field Cham­pi­onships will be held on Fri­day and Satur­day in Sas- ka­toon with a to­tal of 97 ath­letes rep­re­sent­ing SWAC.


The open­ing stages were very close in the Ban­tam Girls 80 Me­tre Hur­dles at the Dis­trict meet.
