Pepper spray suspected in attack
St. Thomas police are searching for a suspect after a man was taken to hospital after being doused with a pepper spray-like substance. Police say an argument at about 6 p.m. Friday near Fifth Avenue and Wellington Street turned physical. A man was pushed backwards and then sprayed with a substance that had a similar effect to the pepper spray officers carry, police said. The man’s eyes and exposed skin immediately burned and swelled. He ran down the street to a neighbouring home and 911 was called, police said. The man whose name wasn’t released was taken St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital where he was treated and released with no permanent damage. St. Thomas police have identified the person responsible and are seeking a warrant for their arrest.
