Veterans John MacFarlane, left, and Brian Thrupp watch the Remembrance Day ceremony that took place at Valleyview Home in St. Thomas Friday. The event saw MP Karen Vecchio, MPP Jeff Yurek and Mayor Heather Jackson take part.
Images of war flashed on the screen as residents and guests of Valleyview Home gathered to remember. Over 100 people packed into the seniors’ residence to pay their respects to veterans who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces.
Six men and three women who call Valleyview home served in the army, but the service was meant to remember all.
MP Karen Vecchio, MPP Jeff Yurek and Mayor Heather Jackson were on hand to show their support for Canadian veterans past and present.
Valleyview recreationist Tala Howald said she organized the service to give residents a chance to pay their respects.
“We value the efforts of the veterans. We have veterans that live here. They are not able usually to get out and participate in any other service. It’s our role to bring things to them and to provide that for them here,” Howald said.
Marie Hartney was a cook in the Canadian Armed Forces. She has been to Remembrance Day services all over the region, but said she thinks the ceremony at Valleyview Home was top notch.
“It’s wonderful,” Hartney said. “I thought it was absolutely wonderful. I’ve been at services in St. Thomas, London and Tobermory. This is good, this is very good.”
Hartney, who is originally from Belmont, served in Ontario and Nova Scotia.
