On this date in 1996, a ma­chine scored its first vic­tory un­der clas­sic chess tour­na­ment rules as an IBM com­puter called “Deep Blue” beat world cham­pion Garry Kas­parov. In 1841, Up­per and Low er Canada w ere united as the Prov­ince of Canada, w ith Kingston as the cap­i­tal.

In 2005, the en­gage­ment of Prince Charles and his long­time lover, Camilla Parker Bowles, w as an­nounced. (They mar­ried tw o months later.)

In 2009, a w ork­ing U.S. com­mer­cial satel­lite and a derelict Rus­sian satel­lite col­lided in space over Siberia, be­lieved to be the first-ever crash of tw o in­tact space craft in or­bit.
