Drunk driver flees crash scene

St. Thomas of­fi­cers charged a 47-year-old man with sev­eral of­fences, in­clud­ing im­paired driv­ing, af­ter the driver of a car was in­volved in a crash and then fled the scene. A van was trav­el­ling east on Elm Street near Peach Tree Boule­vard at about 10 p.m. Mon­day when it was rear ended by a car, po­lice said. The driver of the van pulled over to ex­change in­for­ma­tion with the car driver, but the car didn’t stop. The van driver fol­lowed the car while a pas­sen­ger called 911, po­lice said. Po­lice said no one was injured in the crash. The car driver was ar­rested at his home. Ini­tial breath sam­ples in­di­cate he had about 200 mil­ligrams of al­co­hol in 100 mil­lime­tres of blood, po­lice said, more than two times the le­gal limit. A St. Thomas man is charged with im­paired driv­ing, driv­ing with more than 80 mil­ligrams of al­co­hol in 100 millil­itres of blood, fail­ing to stop at the scene of an ac­ci­dent and driv­ing with an open liquor con­tainer.
