O n this date in 2000, the U.S. pres­i­den­tial­elec­tion was held. The elec­tion was dis­puted be­cause of the close race in Florida, which both Geo rge W. Bush and his D em ocratic ri­val, Al Go re, needed to win. The elec­tion was set­tled five weeks later, when the U.S. Supreme Court­in­ter­vened on B ush’s side by end­ing re­counts in that­state.
