Jas-Mar defends flag football title
Jas-Mar defended its Cornwall Men’s Flag Football League title, winning a thrilling final.
Jas-Mar defeated Shoeless Joe’s 21-20 as the game went right down to the wire.
The first quarter was a chess match with great defence and no scoring.
Jas-Mar scored first, in the second quarter, Branden Picken with the major.
Shoeless Joe’s tied it on a Mike Bissonnette touchdown, and went ahead in the fourth quarter, Jason Denis scoring to make it 14-7.
With four minutes remaining, Blu Grant tied the game for JasMar, scoring on a 60-yard TD run.
Shoeless Joe’s next possession ended with a Dan Bertran interception and a couple of plays later, on third and two, Grant hit Brian O’Neill for the go-ahead touchdown.
With 1:28 remaining in regulation and two timeouts left, Shoeless Joe’s marched downfield and Bissonnette scored his second TD of the contest. On the ensuing convert though, the ball hit the crossbar. With 19 seconds remaining, Jas-Mar took possession and ran out the clock for the one-point victory and second consecutive CMFFL championship.
Picken also had an interception for Jas-Mar, while Alex DeWitt had a sack. Picken also kicked three converts.
For Shoeless Joe’s, Derrik Thomas had an interception. Colin Samuel and Zack Rottier had sacks. Denis kicked two converts.
• In the playoff semifinals, JasMar defeated CrossFit Cornwall in overtime, and Shoeless Joe’s beat Black.
• The three CMFFL hall of fame inductees are Brian Legault, Frank Spagnola and Dave Watson.
• Sam Hutchingame of CrossFit Cornwall (the regular season champs with a record of 13-1) was the rookie of the year, with teammate Jared St. John the MVP and Kyle Labelle the sportsman of the year.
Mike Bissonnette of Shoeless Joe’s was defensive player of the year.
Bissonnette was also named defensive player of the playoffs, while Brian O’Neill of Jas-Mar was the offensive player. Brancon Picken of Jas-Mar was MVP of the playoffs.
