“State of mind” photographs

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS - Sherbrooke

Since Saturday January 15, the Musée des Beaux-arts de Sherbrooke presents until 13 March 2011, photographer Nathalie Daoust’s Frozen in Time, Switzerland. The exhibition comprises some 30 works by this internationally acclaimed artist. The vernissage will take place on Saturday 15 January, at 5:00 p.m., in the presence of the artist.

Montreal-based Nathalie Daoust offers us Frozen in Time, a project carried out during a six-month residency offered by the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec at the Christoph Merian Foundation in Basel, Switzerland. The artist sought to preserve the sense of suspended time and the memory of unique moments impressed upon her by the permanence, timelessness and perfection of the Alps. She used a camera obscura to create black and white photographs that she then coloured by hand, seeking not only to capture a memory of the location, but also to preserve her state of mind at the time: a feeling of being immobilized in time, the impression of an unreal world and of too perfect landscapes. To accentuate this feeling of unreal, the artist adds to her images characters that seem out of place in such an environment.

‘It is an audacious experiment that aims at overcoming the confines of traditional temporal perspective discovering new expressive means, new three-dimensional tricks and new darkroom techniques. Human beings have always held a special fascination for this artist and, in her photographs, she has chosen to underscore a recurring aspect in the behaviour of creative people, people whose inner selves are poets, who have the souls of children, who are restless: the typically human desire of often wanting to escape into an enchanted world, into the world of dreams and to take off for mysterious, fantasy-filled places. Imagination as an alternative to reality, while remaining anchored in the real world.’ by Cristina Franzoni, Zoom Magazine.
