Gaiter comeback falls just short at Concordia
The Bishop’s Gaiters nearly erased a 15-point third-quarter deficit, but could not complete the comeback as they fell 86-81 to the No. 8-ranked Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action Friday in Montreal.
Tim Hunter’s (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) 23 points led the Gaiters, who trailed 50-35 with 6:49 left in the third quarter. Bishop’s chipped away at the lead through the third and fourth quarters, finally getting to within one point at 81-80 with a minute left in the contest. However, the comeback fell short as Kyle Desmarais scored three of his game-high 24 points in the last 40 seconds to ice the game for the Stingers.
The only other Gaiters in double figures were Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.), who scored 18 points, and rookie guard Antoine Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.), who tied his career high with 11 points.
The Gaiters (1-25, 1-22 CIS, 0-9 QUBL) return to action on Thursday, January 27, as they host the Stingers at the Mitchell Gym. Tip off is set for 8 p.m.
Women’s Basketball: Difficulty on the boards proved to be the Bishop’s Gaiters’ undoing as they suffered a 57-51 loss to the Concordia Stingers in Quebec University Basketball League women’s play last Saturday night in Montreal. The Gaiters surrendered 57 rebounds, one short of their season high, as the Stingers came from behind to prevail in a defensive struggle.
The Gaiters led by as many as eight points during the first half, during which they held Concordia to 4-for-35 (11.4%) shooting from the field, while going 39% (9-for-23) on their own. However, Concordia came back, and a 13-0 run over 5:13 midway through the second half proved to be decisive, as the Stingers took a 43-37 lead early in the fourth quarter.
The Gaiters (7-12, 7-11 CIS, 2-7 QUBL) will return to action on Thursday, January 27 as they entertain the Stingers at the Mitchell Gym. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
