Gaiter come­back falls just short at Con­cor­dia

The Bishop’s Gaiters nearly erased a 15-point third-quar­ter deficit, but could not com­plete the come­back as they fell 86-81 to the No. 8-ranked Con­cor­dia Stingers in Que­bec Uni­ver­sity Bas­ket­ball League men’s ac­tion Fri­day in Mon­treal.

Tim Hunter’s (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) 23 points led the Gaiters, who trailed 50-35 with 6:49 left in the third quar­ter. Bishop’s chipped away at the lead through the third and fourth quar­ters, fi­nally get­ting to within one point at 81-80 with a minute left in the con­test. How­ever, the come­back fell short as Kyle Des­marais scored three of his game-high 24 points in the last 40 sec­onds to ice the game for the Stingers.

The only other Gaiters in dou­ble fig­ures were On­nex Black­wood (Scar­bor­ough, Ont.), who scored 18 points, and rookie guard An­toine Côté-Caou­ette (Que­bec City, Que.), who tied his ca­reer high with 11 points.

The Gaiters (1-25, 1-22 CIS, 0-9 QUBL) re­turn to ac­tion on Thurs­day, Jan­uary 27, as they host the Stingers at the Mitchell Gym. Tip off is set for 8 p.m.

Women’s Bas­ket­ball: Dif­fi­culty on the boards proved to be the Bishop’s Gaiters’ un­do­ing as they suf­fered a 57-51 loss to the Con­cor­dia Stingers in Que­bec Uni­ver­sity Bas­ket­ball League women’s play last Satur­day night in Mon­treal. The Gaiters sur­ren­dered 57 re­bounds, one short of their sea­son high, as the Stingers came from be­hind to pre­vail in a de­fen­sive strug­gle.

The Gaiters led by as many as eight points dur­ing the first half, dur­ing which they held Con­cor­dia to 4-for-35 (11.4%) shoot­ing from the field, while go­ing 39% (9-for-23) on their own. How­ever, Con­cor­dia came back, and a 13-0 run over 5:13 mid­way through the sec­ond half proved to be de­ci­sive, as the Stingers took a 43-37 lead early in the fourth quar­ter.

The Gaiters (7-12, 7-11 CIS, 2-7 QUBL) will re­turn to ac­tion on Thurs­day, Jan­uary 27 as they en­ter­tain the Stingers at the Mitchell Gym. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
