Sandglass’ “All Weather Ballads”
Explore North County Life
Internationally acclaimed theater artists Eric Bass and Ines Zeller Bass will present their newest work, “All Weather Ballads” at 7:30pm, Saturday, February 5th at the St. Johnsbury School—as part of the Kingdom County Presents series.
“ All Weather Ballads” is a visual theater performance incorporating puppetry and original ballads by Bass with music by Keith Murphy. The five-song-cycle, interpreted by Vermont musician Nick Keil, portrays the stages of life through our rural North Country experience, when we are stuck in the mud, lost in the aroma of harvest fruit, or reflected in the frozen membrane of an icy lake. It is about a sense of place and those moments when we look both forward and backward in time. “All Weather Ballads” is a performance of dry humor and ironic poignancy which takes the audience through five scenes, each a metaphorical world, a state of being.
The Courier in Geneva, Switzerland calls “All Weather Ballads, “Stunning, humorous, and tender.”
Eric Bass and Ines Zeller Bass began Sandglass Theater in 1982
with the production of Sand, in Germany. It was a love story that told in images and dreams and expectations what two individuals from different worlds carried into the beginning of their young relationship. With “All Weather Ballads,” Eric and Ines come full circle, to celebrate their long history with each other and with Vermont, the place they have called home since 1986.
“All Weather Ballads” is best described as theater that uses puppets—in order to avoid the suggestion that it is a “puppet show” for children. The show has been developed for an adult audience. Kids will surely enjoy the sets and puppets and marvel at Sandglass’ artistry—but audiences should not think that the show is primarily directed at an audience of children under 12.
This show has been developed with special support from The National Endowment for the Arts. The show is being presented by Kingdom County Productions, working in association with Catamount Arts. Tickets for the February 5th performance of “All Weather Ballads” are available at Catamount Arts, St. Johnsbury or by calling 802-748-2600. Boxoffice hours are 1pm to 6pm, Monday through Saturday.
