Po­lar Bears open 2011 with a win

Women’s Hockey ( 8-5) Sherbrooke Ju­nior AA 3, Bishop’s 2 A late goal was the dif­fer­ence as the Po­lar Bears team fell 3-2 to the Sherbrooke Ju­niors on Fri­day night at the W.B. Scott Arena. The Po­lar Bears were down 2-0 af­ter the first pe­riod of play but bat­tled back with sec­ond pe­riod goals by Sara Lariv­iere and Lau­rie La­course. As­sists on the goals went to Alex­ane Her­oux and Lariv­iere. The Gaiters gave up sev­eral turnovers in the third lead­ing to a late Sherbrooke goal which proved to be the game win­ner. Katie Booth stood strong in the Po­lar Bear net as she made sev­eral big saves to keep Bishop’s in the game.

Women’s indoor soc­cer McGill 12, Gaiters 0 Four goals and an as­sist by Alexan­dre Morin-Boucher led the McGill Martlets over the Bishop’s Gaiters 12-0 in Mon­treal on Satur­day af­ter­noon. Meghan Bourque, Han­nah Rivkin and Han­nah Sim­mons all scored braces while Se­lena Co­larossi and Ju­lia Ba­hen both added sin­gles. Rookie goalie Molly Bu­choltz had a sea­son­high 28 saves in the game as she took home Gaiters’ game MVP hon­ours. Valérie Labbé grabbed the shutout for the McGill, while Sim­mons was given the MVP hon­our for the Martlets (2-0-1). UP NEXT: The Gaiters con­tinue reg­u­lar sea­son play on Sun­day as they travel to Mon­treal to take on Con­cor­dia at the Stinger Dome. Kick-off will be at 1 p.m.

Ath­letes of the month: The Bishop’s Gaiters Male Ath­lete of the Week is Tim Hunter of the Men’s Bas­ket­ball team. The third year for­ward from Baie d’Urfé, Que scored the team’s only dou­ble-dou­ble Thurs­day night with 15 points and ten re­bounds. Hunter fol­lowed up on Thurs­day night’s per­for­mance by lead­ing the Gaiters to their first league win with 22 points, eight re­bounds and five as­sists. The Bishop’s Gaiters Fe­male Ath­lete of the Week is Danna Jan­vier of the Women’s Bas­ket­ball team. Jan­vier, a first-year cen­tre from Laval Que., was the lead­ing scorer for the Gaiters on Thurs­day night, as she scored 12 points, as well as lead­ing the team with five re­bounds on Satur­day night.
