Hunter’s 22 gathers victory for Gaiters
Men’s Basketball: A 22-point night by Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters their first league win of the season over the UQAM Citadins in Quebec University Basketball League men’s action Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym. The thirdyear forward went 8-for-16 from the field along with grabbing eight rebounds and adding five assists.
Toronto natives Oraine Green and Sean Monplaisir helped the Gaiters to secure the win as they both scored 12 points. Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) chipped in with ten points and two blocks before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Vincent Lanctôt-Fortier led the way for the Citadins as he scored a game-high 26 points while adding seven rebounds. Following Lanctôt-Fortier was Gregory St-Amand who had the game’s only double-double as he scored 14 points and had ten rebounds.
After a tight first quarter the Gaiters took the lead for good with 1:11 left in the first quarter as Antoine Côté-Caouette’s (Quebec Que.) jumper made the lead 13-12 for the Gaiters. The Gaiters led 36-32 at halftime and stretched their lead to as many as 14 points in the third quarter.
UQAM (7-18, 5-13 CIS, 4-6 QUBL) pulled to within four points in the fourth quarter, but the Gaiters would not allow the lead to slip away as they responded with an 8-0 run in the last three minutes to dash UQAM’s comeback hopes.
Bishop’s shot 50% (17- 34) in the first half and finished the game shooting 44% (30-69) from the field as well as outrebounding UQAM 43 to 38. The Gaiters committed a season low eight turnovers.
The Gaiters (2-26, 2-23 CIS, 1-10 QUBL) look to build on the win as they take on Laval next Saturday February 5th at 8 p.m. in Quebec City.
Women’s Basketball: A ten-footer by Karine Boudrias with eight seconds left gave the UQAM Citadins a come-frombehind 64-63 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action on Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym.
Boudrias, who finished with ten points, could not convert the three-point play, and the Gaiters had the ball with a chance to win the game. However, the storybook ending was spoiled as Catherine BélangerPâquet’s off-balance jumper rimmed out as time expired.
The final sequence was the culmination of a wild fourth quarter that saw two ties and seven lead changes. The Gaiters led through most of the game, holding leads of 16-10 after the first quarter and 28-22 at halftime. Bishop’s (7-14, 2-9 QUBL) stretched their lead to as many as 13 points at 42-29 midway through the third quarter, but UQAM (10-12, 6-4 QUBL) used a 12-3 run over the next three minutes to cut the gap to 45-41. The Gaiters led 49-44 after the third quarter, and UQAM did not take the lead until a three-point play by Émie Simard at 4:04 put them up 58-57.
Simard led the visitors with 20 points, as she went 7-for11 from the field. Boudrias was the only other Citadin in double figures. Marjolaine Gauthier-Théorêt picked up a game-high ten rebounds for the Citadins, who outrebounded Bishop’s 56-36.
For Bishop’s, Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) led with ten points, while Bailey Trafford (Centerville, N.B.) and Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.) scored nine each.
The Gaiters return to action on Saturday, February 6 as they visit the Laval Rouge et Or. Tipoff at the PEPS in Quebec City is set for 6 p.m.
