Winter Fun in Stanstead this Saturday

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS - Victoria Vanier Stanstead

The Stanstead Recreational Association has organized another action-packed day of activities for everyone, this Saturday, February 12th. Winter Fun Day or Plaisirs d’Hiver will take place between noon and 4:00pm, in Beebe Memorial Park, and almost all of the activities are free.

Activities for all ages have been organized. There will be inflatable structures for the young ones and the popular mechanical bull, for teenagers and adults, is back. Sliding will take place on the big hill again and people are being asked to bring their crazy carpets instead of sleds, if they have them.

The “polar plunge” competition is back, starting at 2:00, along with a few cash prizes. Three judges will be taken from the crowd to decide which three plunges have the most entertainment value. If you want to take part in the plunge, or the new giant foozball game at 1:00 or the kinball game at 2:30, you must first register at the cantine.

Tickets for the dog sled rides and the pony rides, the only activities that aren’t free, must also be bought at the cantine.

“This year they are building a big igloo. Last week, the town and Sylvain Matte were cutting blocks out of packed snow to build it,” said A.J. Bedard, the president of the Recreational Association.

A hockey game, featuring a shoot-out after each period, will be played at the rink in Beebe Memorial Park at 12:30, between the 40 plus team and the junior team from Stanstead College, but don’t show up empty-handed! “The admission for this game is one non-perishable food item which will be given to the CAB Rediker,” said A.J.

The Stanstead Culture and Recreation Centre will be holding a fundraiser at the rink after the hockey game. For $5, adults can compete in a shoot-out with the chance to win $50, and children can compete in an accuracy shooting contest, for $2, with the chance to win a hockey stick.

One of the Culture and Recreation Centre’s course instructors, Julie Chauvette, will conduct a work-out session to demonstrate what her course is all about.

To keep everyone warm there will be a bonfire all afternoon. The cantine on site will be selling hot soup, hotdogs and beverages. The Laliberté Farm will also be there selling maple syrup products and making taffy on snow at 12:30.

Anyone who would like to help organize events like this one or who has ideas for events should feel free to talk to any one of the Association’s members during the Winter Fun Day. They are always looking for new members.
