Gaiters suffer road loss at Laval
Basketball: A doubledouble by Marie-Michele Genois led the Laval Rouge et Or to a 71-53 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action last Saturday at the PEPS gym in Quebec City. Genois scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, as Laval blew the game open with a 24-point second quarter.
The Gaiters got off to a strong start, and took a 16-8 lead with 2:35 left in the first quarter. However, Laval clawed back to within one at 18-17 after the period ended, and took the lead for good on a Genois layup with only 13 seconds gone in the second quarter. Laval broke the game open with a 15-3 run over the last five minutes of the first half, and led 41-26 at halftime. The Gaiters were unable to cut into the lead, as Laval led 59-39 after three quarters and cruised to the win.
For Bishop’s, rookie centre Bailey Trafford (Centerville, N.B.) led with 13 points and six rebounds. Mélanie OuelletGodcharles (Gatineau, Que.) was the only other Gaiter in double figures, with ten points.
The Gaiters shot only 28.1% from the field, and were outrebounded 42-32 by the Rouge et Or.
The Gaiters return to action on Saturday, February 12 as they host the McGill Martlets (20-4, 20-3 CIS, 10-1 QUBL) at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
Men’s Basketball: Jérôme TurcotteRouthier’s 20 points led the No. 8-ranked Laval Rouge et Or to a 100-79 victory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec University Basketball League action last Saturday night at the PEPS gymnasium in Quebec City. The fourthyear forward scored 14 first-half points, as the hosts used a 19-0 run late in the first quarter to take command of the game.
The Gaiters got off to a good start, as they went on a 11-0 run over 1:55 early in the first quarter to take an 11-3 lead. However, Laval crept back into the game over the next two minutes before embarking on their decisive run. By the time a Sean Monplaisir (Toronto, Ont.) dunk with 24 seconds left in the quarter ended the streak, Laval had turned a 14-10 deficit into a 29-14 lead.
The Gaiters (2-27, 2-24 CIS, 1-11 QUBL) return home on Saturday, February 12, as they face the McGill Redmen at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
