Gaiters suf­fer road loss at Laval

Bas­ket­ball: A dou­ble­dou­ble by Marie-Michele Genois led the Laval Rouge et Or to a 71-53 vic­tory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Que­bec Univer­sity Bas­ket­ball League women’s ac­tion last Satur­day at the PEPS gym in Que­bec City. Genois scored 15 points and grabbed 13 re­bounds, as Laval blew the game open with a 24-point sec­ond quar­ter.

The Gaiters got off to a strong start, and took a 16-8 lead with 2:35 left in the first quar­ter. How­ever, Laval clawed back to within one at 18-17 af­ter the pe­riod ended, and took the lead for good on a Genois layup with only 13 sec­onds gone in the sec­ond quar­ter. Laval broke the game open with a 15-3 run over the last five min­utes of the first half, and led 41-26 at half­time. The Gaiters were un­able to cut into the lead, as Laval led 59-39 af­ter three quar­ters and cruised to the win.

For Bishop’s, rookie cen­tre Bai­ley Traf­ford (Cen­ter­ville, N.B.) led with 13 points and six re­bounds. Mélanie Ouel­letGod­charles (Gatineau, Que.) was the only other Gaiter in dou­ble fig­ures, with ten points.

The Gaiters shot only 28.1% from the field, and were out­re­bounded 42-32 by the Rouge et Or.

The Gaiters re­turn to ac­tion on Satur­day, Fe­bru­ary 12 as they host the McGill Martlets (20-4, 20-3 CIS, 10-1 QUBL) at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Men’s Bas­ket­ball: Jérôme Tur­cot­teRouthier’s 20 points led the No. 8-ranked Laval Rouge et Or to a 100-79 vic­tory over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Que­bec Univer­sity Bas­ket­ball League ac­tion last Satur­day night at the PEPS gym­na­sium in Que­bec City. The fourthyear for­ward scored 14 first-half points, as the hosts used a 19-0 run late in the first quar­ter to take com­mand of the game.

The Gaiters got off to a good start, as they went on a 11-0 run over 1:55 early in the first quar­ter to take an 11-3 lead. How­ever, Laval crept back into the game over the next two min­utes be­fore em­bark­ing on their de­ci­sive run. By the time a Sean Mon­plaisir (Toronto, Ont.) dunk with 24 sec­onds left in the quar­ter ended the streak, Laval had turned a 14-10 deficit into a 29-14 lead.

The Gaiters (2-27, 2-24 CIS, 1-11 QUBL) re­turn home on Satur­day, Fe­bru­ary 12, as they face the McGill Red­men at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
