Bal­anced at­tack leads Gaiters to up­set of McGill

Women’s Bas­ket­ball: A bal­anced at­tack led the Bishop’s Gaiters to a re­sound­ing 81-62 up­set of the No. 10-ranked McGill Martlets in Que­bec Univer­sity Bas­ket­ball League ac­tion tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Five Gaiters scored in dou­ble fig­ures, led by 14 points by Bai­ley Traf­ford (Cen­ter­ville, N.B.), as Bishop’s led from wire-to-wire against the league lead­ers.

The rookie cen­tre went 6-for-11 from the field, and grabbed a team-high five re­bounds. Fifth-year for­ward Katy Ger­main scored 13 points, in­clud­ing go­ing 3-for-4 from three-point ter­ri­tory. Vet­eran guards Mélanie Ouel­let-God­charles (Gatineau, Que.) and Jessy Roy (Val d’Or, Que.) scored 12 points each, while Gabrielle Cham­ber­land (Sher­brooke, Que.) chipped in with 11. Roy also added a sea­son-high eight as­sists, fall­ing just short of an un­con­ven­tional dou­ble-dou­ble.

With the win, the Gaiters (8-15, 3-10 QUBL) now move one game be­hind fourth­place Laval (4-9 QUBL). Both teams have three games re­main­ing, and the Gaiters and Rouge et Or face each other next Satur­day in Len­noxville. McGill (21-5, 11-2 QUBL) had pre­vi­ously clinched first place in the league.

The Gaiters and Martlets con­clude their home-and­home se­ries on Thurs­day night in Mon­treal. Tipoff at the Love Competition Hall is set for 6 p.m.

Men’s Bas­ket­ball: Winn Clarke’s 19 points led the McGill Red­men to a 73-64 vic­tory over the Bishop›s Gaiters in Que­bec Univer­sity Bas­ket­ball League men›s ac­tion tonight at the Mitchell Gym.

The first three quar­ters of the game saw six teams and nine lead changes as nei­ther team was able to gain com­plete con­trol. The Gaiters led through the ma­jor­ity of the first half, as they took and 18-15 first-quar­ter and 34-42 half­time lead. How­ever a 25-point third-quar­ter, capped by a 10-0 run at the 2:12 mark would see McGill take the lead and never look back.

Sopho­more guard On­nex Black­wood (Scar­bor­ough, Ont.) led the Gaiters with 17 points while grab­bing eight re­bounds. Mike An­drews (Oakville, Ont.) would take home a dou­ble-dou­ble with 13 points and 11 re­bounds along with three blocks. The only other Gaiter is dou­ble dig­its was Tim Hunter (Baie d›Urfé, Que) with ten points while also adding a game high four as­sists.

With the win McGill (1415, 13-11 CIS 8-5 QUBL) moves to within a win of sec­ond-place Laval with three games left to play in the reg­u­lar sea­son. The Gaiters (2-28, 2-25 CIS, 1-12 QUBL) were elim­i­nated from post­sea­son con­tention af­ter McGill›s loss to UQAM last night.

The Gaiters re­turn to ac­tion on Thurs­day as they travel to Mon­treal to fin­ish the home and home match-up with McGill. Tip-off will be at 8 p.m.
