Genois’ 29 leads Laval to comeback win over Gaiters
Women’s Basketball: Marie-Michelle Genois scored 29 points to lead the Laval Rouge et Or over the Bishop’s Gaiters, 69-68, in Quebec University Basketball League women’s action on Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym. The fifth-year centre added nine rebounds and three blocks as Laval scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to edge the Gaiters and clinch a playoff spot.
The Gaiters grabbed the lead early, ending the first quarter with a 20-11 lead. The Gaiters stretched that lead to as many as 15 points at 6:30 in the second-quarter and took a 36-27 lead into halftime. The Gaiters held onto that lead until Laval went on an 8-0 run which was capped off by a Genois jumper at 4:22 to tie the game at 57-57.
The Gaiters were led by Jessy Roy (Val-d’Or, Que.) who scored 15 points while adding four assists. Fifth year guards Mélanie Ouellet-Godcharles (Gatineau, Que.) and Katy Germain (Val d’Or, Que.) scored 11 and eight points respectively in their final home games as Gaiters. Trafford and Gabrielle Côté-Caouette (Quebec City, Que.) were the only other Gaiters with double figures with ten points each.
With the win Laval (8-15, 8-15 CIS, 5-10 QUBL) knocked Bishop’s (8-17, 8-16 CIS, 3-12 QUBL) out of the playoffs as they clinched fourth place in the QUBL standings.
Bishop’s will close out their 2010-2011 season next Saturday as they visit Concordia. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
Men’s Basketball: A 21-point performance by Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters over the No. 10-ranked Laval Rouge et Or, 82-75, Saturday night in Quebec University Basketball League Men’s play in front of a boisterous crowd of 1,173 at the Mitchell Gym. Hunter went 7-for-9 from the field, including going 4-for-5 on three-point attempts.
The Gaiters took control of the game with an 8-0 run early in the fourth quarter, capped by a Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.) jumper at 7:25 to push the lead to 64-57. Laval pulled back to within one as Jean-Francois Beaulieu-Maheux hit a three to make the score 73-72 with 1:15 to go, but the Gaiters responded with a three of their own by Alex AudetteGénier (Montreal, Que) to restore their four-point cushion. Three free throws down the stretch sealed the deal for the Gaiters.
Along with Hunter’s 21, the Gaiters were helped by Audette-Génier, who added 15 points. The other Gaiters in double digits were Sean Monplaisir (Toronto, Ont.), who scored 11 points and four assists, while Antoine Côté-Caouette (Quebec, Que.) scored ten and added five boards.
The Gaiters (3-27, 3-24 CIS, 2-11 QUBL) end their 2010-11 season next Saturday as they take on Concordia in Montreal. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
