Genois’ 29 leads Laval to come­back win over Gaiters

Women’s Bas­ket­ball: Marie-Michelle Genois scored 29 points to lead the Laval Rouge et Or over the Bishop’s Gaiters, 69-68, in Que­bec Univer­sity Bas­ket­ball League women’s ac­tion on Satur­day night at the Mitchell Gym. The fifth-year cen­tre added nine re­bounds and three blocks as Laval scored 28 points in the fourth quar­ter to edge the Gaiters and clinch a play­off spot.

The Gaiters grabbed the lead early, end­ing the first quar­ter with a 20-11 lead. The Gaiters stretched that lead to as many as 15 points at 6:30 in the sec­ond-quar­ter and took a 36-27 lead into half­time. The Gaiters held onto that lead un­til Laval went on an 8-0 run which was capped off by a Genois jumper at 4:22 to tie the game at 57-57.

The Gaiters were led by Jessy Roy (Val-d’Or, Que.) who scored 15 points while adding four as­sists. Fifth year guards Mélanie Ouel­let-God­charles (Gatineau, Que.) and Katy Ger­main (Val d’Or, Que.) scored 11 and eight points re­spec­tively in their fi­nal home games as Gaiters. Traf­ford and Gabrielle Côté-Caou­ette (Que­bec City, Que.) were the only other Gaiters with dou­ble fig­ures with ten points each.

With the win Laval (8-15, 8-15 CIS, 5-10 QUBL) knocked Bishop’s (8-17, 8-16 CIS, 3-12 QUBL) out of the play­offs as they clinched fourth place in the QUBL stand­ings.

Bishop’s will close out their 2010-2011 sea­son next Satur­day as they visit Con­cor­dia. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.

Men’s Bas­ket­ball: A 21-point per­for­mance by Tim Hunter (Baie d’Urfé, Que.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters over the No. 10-ranked Laval Rouge et Or, 82-75, Satur­day night in Que­bec Univer­sity Bas­ket­ball League Men’s play in front of a bois­ter­ous crowd of 1,173 at the Mitchell Gym. Hunter went 7-for-9 from the field, in­clud­ing go­ing 4-for-5 on three-point at­tempts.

The Gaiters took con­trol of the game with an 8-0 run early in the fourth quar­ter, capped by a Mike An­drews (Oakville, Ont.) jumper at 7:25 to push the lead to 64-57. Laval pulled back to within one as Jean-Fran­cois Beaulieu-Ma­heux hit a three to make the score 73-72 with 1:15 to go, but the Gaiters re­sponded with a three of their own by Alex Audet­teGénier (Mon­treal, Que) to re­store their four-point cush­ion. Three free throws down the stretch sealed the deal for the Gaiters.

Along with Hunter’s 21, the Gaiters were helped by Audette-Génier, who added 15 points. The other Gaiters in dou­ble dig­its were Sean Mon­plaisir (Toronto, Ont.), who scored 11 points and four as­sists, while An­toine Côté-Caou­ette (Que­bec, Que.) scored ten and added five boards.

The Gaiters (3-27, 3-24 CIS, 2-11 QUBL) end their 2010-11 sea­son next Satur­day as they take on Con­cor­dia in Mon­treal. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
