Inundation abounds

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS BRIEFS - Staff North Hatley

As the well-known Pilsen water level sign indicated late yesterday afternoon, the water level of lake Massawippi was almost 4 feet above its normal level. There were some evacuations earlier in the day and streets in Hatley Township, near Ayer’s Cliff, were closed as was the 108 near the Capelton drive, forcing motorists to find another way to get into North Hatley if they came from the southern part of Sherbrooke; the water there had risen by about 2 feet . Water was rushing through the still not completely finished dam at more than three times the normal flow.

The situation was expected to get worse through the evening.
