The Ministry of Transport closed the bridge on the 108 between Hatley and Waterville on Monday night for an undetermined amount of time. The bridge will remain closed until inspectors can take a more thorough look at the structure to determine if it is safe following the recent flooding in that area. “The inspectors cannot do a proper inspection until the water level goes down,” explained Transport ministry spokesperson Helene Beauchesne.

The bridge was re-opened last week after a first inspection, however, following flooding, the ministry always inspects bridges a second time, and it was after this second inspection on Monday night that the bridge was determined to be unsafe.

The department will determine a detour route on their network of roads which does not include municipal roads.

The transport department will not know the extent of the damage done to the bridge on the 108, now closed, until the water level decreases and inspectors can take another look.
