US fishermen rescued on Lake Massawippi

Stanstead Journal - - NEWS BRIEF - Special collaboration Mike McKenna RIPI North Hatley

LastSaturday North Hatley fire department was busy responding to two calls within three minutes. The first was for a residential fire and the second was for a water rescue on Lake Massawippi. Two teams were dispatched. The first team responding to the fire call discovered that it was a false alarm caused by burnt cookies. However the second team proceeded to recover two fishermen from New Hampshire clinging to an overturned boat in the lake. Distance from shore and very cold water temperatures placed the fishermen in a very dangerous situation. However both fishermen were rescued successfully. The only casualty of the day was the cookies. This happy ending was entirely due to the fact that they were wearing their life jackets, as their wives had told them. It was a long winter and has been a very wet spring, shortly many of us will be out and about around the on the water. Mishaps will happen but with the right equipment used properly, listening to our wives and a little luck perhaps we will have a summer with nothing but happy endings.
