There were many citizens at Ogden’s last council meeting. “The issue most discussed was the condition of several buildings in Tomifobia,” said Ogden mayor Joe Stairs. There are a few neglected buildings in that area, such as the old church, and others with sheds and balconies in a state of disrepair. “I told the citizens that it is something we will look into. We’ll look at all the buildings in Tomifobia and how they detract from the overall environment and then Council will decide how to approach it. You have to give this kind of thing serious consideration and talk to the people involved,” explained the mayor.
The construction of the large gazebo-type building at Weir Park has begun. “The concrete base has been poured and the rest will be built within the next two or three weeks,” mentioned Mr. Stairs. It will be ready for this summer’s outdoor events at Weir Park. The revitalization work that was to be done on the shoreline has not started yet; the water level is too high.
When asked how Mr. Stairs and his wife, Nancy Layton, felt about the last federal election, Mr. Stairs replied: “The whole family was thrilled. I wore my orange shirt to the MRC meeting after the election and, although those meetings are usually calm, people were shouting ‘Jack, Jack!’” Nancy Layton travelled extensively with Jack Layton, her brother, during his successful campaign. Dunn Property News The committee working on the establishment of the park on the land that was donated by the late Michael Dunn recently received news from the environment ministry. “The ministry of the environment announced that it will be a protected site, a Reserve de biodiversité, and that they would put up a few signs and the rest would be up to us,” commented Mr. Stairs, who is on that committee, disappointedly. “We replied to the ministry that we had hoped to get a little more help than that to get it set up. Pierre Reid is supporting us.” Funds will be needed to protect the area’s diverse ecosystem, build trails, put up additional signage and to patrol the park.
