Local Market Opens for St. Jean Baptiste Weekend
Stanstead’slocal market opens June 26th at 10:00 AM at Stanstead College on the front lawn near the main gates. The market became very popular last year and drew larger and larger crowds each week. This year’s market will be opening earlier in order to take advantage of the start of strawberry season, although with the recent weather, there is now a question as to whether the strawberries will be available by month’s end. Whether they are ready or not, Eva Juul of La Veille Douane will be offering strawberry shortcake in exchange for a small donation, funds from which will help offset the costs of running the market.
Organizers have confirmed that there are already approximately twenty local vendors and farmers scheduled for the opening day. Roughly thirty vendors have applied to appear for at least some of the scheduled market dates throughout the summer, This year’s market will include many of last year’s vendors but will also include a couple of new products, including organic produce from a nearby farm. Still available will be a variety of fresh farm produce, bison, baked goods, jellies, crafts, soap and jewellery, to name a few. Local citizens are encouraged to come to the market and show their support for local farmers and vendors.
