Gaiters hitting the turf across the CFL this week
Ninecurrent and former members of the Bishop’s Gaiters football team hit the field last week as the CFL began its preseason schedule.
Five Gaiters were on the field June 15th, in Calgary, as the B.C. Lions took on the Stampeders. Fullback Tim Cronk joined veterans Dan McCullough, James Yurichuk and Shawn Gore on the Lions roster, while Junior Turner, who was drafted ninth overall by Calgary, also maked his pro debut. (Running back Jamall Lee is still recovering from offseason knee surgery, and is not expected to play.) Friday night, June 16th, we saw Mathieu Boulay and Kyle Exume don the Green and White for the Saskatchewan Roughriders as they hosted Edmonton. Exume was drafted in the sixth round by the Roughriders, while Boulay is on a free-agent tryout.
CFL training camps will continue through this week, with the regular season opening on June 30 as the Lions visit Montreal. Note that participation in CFL preseason contests does not affect a player’s CIS eligibility.
The Gaiters will open their 2011 football season on Friday, September 2 as they visit the Sherbrooke Vert & Or.
