NEK Lakes Century Tour to benefit Orleans County Citizen Advocacy
Orleans County Citizen Advocacy (OCCA) invites the public to join the Northeast Kingdom’s longest running century bicycle tour, the fourteenth annual Terry & Ben Claassen Memorial Northeast Kingdom Lakes Century, on Saturday, September 17. Cyclists can travel 25, 50, 75 or 100 miles on paved roads. Our loops take riders through the heart of the Kingdom, past field and forest, lakes and rivers, towns and villages. We can not predict what stage the foliage will be at, but whether it’s just beginning to hint at flaming oranges, gold and reds, at its peak, or in its final fading glory, we can promise it will be beautiful!
Each of the four loops begins and ends at Crystal Lake State Park in Barton, VT, where free parking and changing facilities are provided. Riders may leave anytime between 7 and 10 am, with two mass starts at 7 & 8 am, and go at whatever pace they want. Painted arrows on the pavement, maps and cue sheets are all provided to assist riders in following their desired route. We provide home-style and healthy snacks & drinks to choose from at Crystal and the other 5 rest stops. Plus a BBQ tops the day off back at Crystal, all included in the registration fee. On call mechanics are available for breakdowns.
The tour is a fund-raiser for OCCA, a nonprofit that builds and supports one-to-one independent long term relationships between unpaid community members and people with developmental disabilities; to ensure that people with disabilities are protected, heard, empowered, respected and included. The tour is named in memory of Terry & Ben Claassen, a father & son who lived in Washington D.C. and Irasburg. They were killed in an airplane crash in 1996, and memorial gifts made in their honor to OCCA provided substantial financial help to the program.
Riders who pre-register by 9/10 pay $50; the cost increases to $60 after that. All who pre-register receive a free t-shirt. T-shirts may also be purchased at the event. Register online at Active.com or www.orlanscountycitizenadvocacy.org., by contacting Program Director, Ellen Bowen, at 873-3285 or firstname.lastname@example.org, or just show up at Crystal that morning. Those with questions please call Ellen at 873-3285.
