Sunnyside Athletes Have Busy Week
Sunnyside Elementary School’s athletes in grades four through six have had a busy week in sports and they aren’t finished yet. Last Tuesday the school’s cross-country running team competed in a 2.5 km run that took place at Ayer’s Cliff Fairgrounds. Participants were from five local elementary schools; Sunnyside, Ayer’s Cliff, Princess Elizabeth, Lennoxville and Hatley. There were 58 boys and 68 girls competing in the competition. Medals were awarded for the top male and female runners placing first through third. Sunnyside’s Mariane Noel placed third in the girls’ competition.
Sunnyside’s soccer team took part in a three-school competition at Ayer’s Cliff Elementary School on Tuesday, September 27th. Participating schools were Ayer’s Cliff, Princess Elizabeth and Sunnyside. Each school played the other two schools twice, with boys and girls playing on
separate teams, for a total of six games per school. The final results for the girls’ teams were Sunnyside and Princess Elizabeth tied for first, and tied for first place amongst the boys’ teams were Ayer’s Cliff and Princess Elizabeth.
Wednesday, September 28th, Sunnyside will hold its’ annual Terry Fox Run, where students will be running or walking 4 km to sponsor the Terry Fox cancer charity fund. The following day, Thursday, September 29th, Sunnyside’s cross-country running team will travel to Bishop’s University in Lennoxville to participate in another 2.5 km run, with the same 5 schools participating. Cross country running competitions are expected to be scheduled at least five times this year.
Next week we suspect the kids on the soccer and cross country running teams will take a well-deserved break from competition…to warm up for the next round. Good luck to all competitors!
