Millie’s will be missed

Millie’s Diner, located on Dufferin Street in the Rrock Island sector of Stanstead, officially closed its’ doors this past week after almost seven years of operation. Millie’s owner, Bashar Shbib, has spoken in recent months of his intention to close the restaurant in order to concentrate on completing his doctoral degree in film. Shbib, who is a filmaker by profession, opened the restaurant many years ago. He personally cooked and served his customers. The restaurant did not have a fixed menu per se, but rather dinner menus were decided upon based on the whim of the owner on any given day. The concept was original, and the menu never grew tiresome as a result. The ecclectic ambiance and the quirky character of the owner were only part of the restaurant›s charm. Local singers would frequent the diner and perform for dinner guests and the restaurant was often packed at night. Another cause for the close was the fact the building›s owner had scheduled repair work to be done on the foundation. When the town had constructed the parking lot in back of the building there was structural damage done to the foundation due to the drilling. Repairs are scheduled to begin shortly and Shbib was not given a timeframe as to when they could be completed. Given his desire to complete his studies full time, Shbib agreed this was an ideal time to close the restaurant, given the landlord›s desire to prepare the building for what may be extensive repairs.
