Gaiters down Sher­brooke to clinch men’s rugby home play­off game

Apair of tries by Noah Har­ri­son (Toronto, Ont.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters to a 20-12 win over the Sher­brooke Vert & Or in Que­bec con­fer­ence men’s rugby ac­tion last Sun­day evening in Sher­brooke. With the win, the Gaiters clinched sec­ond place in the Que­bec univer­sity rugby union, and will host the Con­cor­dia Stingers

in a league semi-fi­nal on Fri­day night.

The Gaiters led 15-0 at half­time be­fore Sher­brooke mounted a sec­ond-half come­back. How­ever, the Gaiters held off the late charge by the hosts and kept the Vert & Or from tak­ing any points from the con­test.

Nic John­son (Toronto, Ont.) also scored a try for the Gaiters, while a con­vert and a penalty goal by Ni­co­las Alexan­dre ( Bordeaux, France) rounded out the scor­ing.

Si­mon Maig­nan and Emile Pi­card scored tries for Sher­brooke, with Yan­nick Mailhot scor­ing a con­ver­sion.

Rookie lock Max Grou­ette (Sur­rey, B.C.) was named the Gaiters’ man of the match, both for his work in the scrums and for push­ing the Gaiters’ at­tack for­ward.

With the win, the Gaiters fin­ish the reg­u­lar sea­son with a 3-2-1 record and 14 points, good for sec­ond place in the Que­bec univer­sity rugby union. The Gaiters will host third­place Con­cor­dia (1-41, 7 points) on Fri­day night, Oc­to­ber 28th at Coul­ter Field. Kick­off is set for 8:15 p.m. Sher­brooke (1-5-0, 5 pts) will visit Mcgill (6-0-0, 28 pts) in the other league semi-fi­nal, also on Fri­day night.
