Despite Strong Start Cougars Lose In Semi Final Game
It was a sad sight on the Coulter field this past Saturday, as the Champlain Cougars lost in the AAA CEGEP football semi-final against the F-X Garneau Élans by a score of 48-27. Many Champlain players left the field with heavy hearts and bitter feelings, many of them for the last time as Cougars. “It’s tough… When you look at those third year guys, it’s sad to see them leave [without a championship]” said Cougar head coach Jean-francois Joncas.
The Cougars offense was strong in the first quarter. Their first touchdown followed an F-X fumble recovered by Jordan Comtois. After moving up to the 38 yard line, quarterback Anthony Auclair threw the ball downfield over a defender and straight into the arms of a streaking Alboury Ndao.
Champlain added a safety after the defense backed the Élans up, forcing them to kneel down in their endzone on the punt. Devon Stewart then had a seven yard touchdown run.
The opposing team opened the floodgates in the second quarter. F-X scored their first touchdown on a run by the quarterback. They went on to add three more touchdowns before the half, while Champlain scored a field goal after an 87 yard kick return by Francis Lovinsky. F-X Garneau scored three more touchdowns in the second half, while holding the Cougars at bay. Champlain scored again with an 80 yard pass to Alboury Ndao. F-X intercepted the ball and ran down the clock.
