Gaiters drop second straight game on U.S. road trip
Jasper Grassa scored 29 points, including 18 in the first half, and freshman forward Andrew Shaw added 21 off the bench as the Bentley Falcons downed the Bishop’s Gaiters, 101-74 on Sunday afternoon at Waltham, Mass.
The duo combined for 13 of Bentley’s 19 three-pointers, with Grassa draining eight of 11 from outside the arc and Shaw burying five of seven. Overall, Grassa was 10 of 15 from the floor with a stat line that also included seven assists, five rebounds and two steals. Shaw finished eight of 12 overall in 19 minutes of action.
The Gaiters also had four players score in doubles with the list headed by forward Jeremy Leonard-smith (Ottawa, Ont.). He scored 14 points, and the Gaiters received a double-double (11 points, 10 boards) from guard Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.). The other Gaiters in double figures were Tim Hunter (Baie d’urfé, Que.), who scored 11 points and Mike Andrews (Oakville, Ont.), who added 12.
Both teams shot well overall (Bentley 50 percent, Bishop’s 47.5), but the Gaiters couldn’t match the Falcons’ hot hand from downtown. While the Falcons buried half of their 38 three-point attempts, Bishop’s was just six of 24 from downtown.
Bentley also took better care of the ball, giving it up only 13 times while turning Bishop’s 22 turns into 32 points.
The loss is the Gaiters’ second on their two-game U.S. road trip, as they fell 89-71 to Franklin Pierce (N.H.) on Saturday night. The Gaiters (5-5, 5-2 CIS) open their regular season on Saturday night, as they host the UQAM Citadins at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
