Diane Roy finishes 6th in New York Marathon
Hatley wheelchair racer Diane Roy was happy with her sixth place finish at the New York Marathon on Sunday. Although a strong marathoner, Ms. Roy is not strong on hilly courses such as the New York course and so was hoping to finish in the top ten. She finished with a time of 1 h 57 min 59 s. First place finisher was American Amanda Mc Grory with a time of 1 h 50 min 24 s., a course record.
“I knew it would be hard because there was a group of riders who climbed better than me. I was racing alone for most of the race, however, I was able to get ahead of several of the girls that I thought I wouldn’t be able to beat,” said Ms. Roy.
The wheelchair racer will now rest for a few weeks before beginning training again for the 2012 year, one that includes the Paralympics. Beginning in January, she will spend three weeks in Australia before heading to Florida for more training. At the end of May, the athletes representing Canada at the London Paralympics will be named.
