Mon­plaisir’s 17 not enough as Gaiters fall to UQAM

Despitea game-high 17 points from Sean Mon­plaisir (Toronto, Ont.), the Bishop’s Gaiters fell, 70-62, to the UQAM Ci­tadins in Que­bec univer­sity bas­ket­ball league play tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Mon­plaisir was 7-for-11 from the field and also had four as­sists in 31 min­utes.

UQAM (6-9, 3-3 CIS, 1-0 Que­bec) was led by 16 points from Gre­gory St-amand. Eric CoteKoug­n­ima had a dou­ble­dou­ble with 12 points and 11 re­bounds. UQAM held a sig­nif­i­cant edge on the glass, out­re­bound­ing Bishop’s 50-35.

In ad­di­tion to Mon­plaisir’s 17, Bishop’s got 11 points from On­nex Black­wood (Scar­bor­ough, Ont.), and ten from new­comer Mukiya Post (Vic­to­ria, B.C.). Mike An­drews scored eight points and grabbed a teamhigh ten re­bounds. Tim Hunter led the Gaiters with five as­sists be­fore leav­ing the game in the sec­ond quar­ter with a lower-body in­jury.

The Gaiters came out strongly, much to the de­light of the bois­ter­ous crowd of 905, and used an 8-0 run to take a 15-4 lead mid­way through the first quar­ter. How­ever, UQAM crept back into the game and cut the mar­gin to 21-17 by the end of the pe­riod.

The Gaiters shot 39% from the field, while UQAM was 36.4%. UQAM com­mit­ted 26 turnovers, to the Gaiters’ 23.

The Gaiters are back in ac­tion on Fri­day, as they visit the Laval Rouge et Or. Tipoff is sched­uled for 8 p.m.
