Monplaisir’s 17 not enough as Gaiters fall to UQAM
Despitea game-high 17 points from Sean Monplaisir (Toronto, Ont.), the Bishop’s Gaiters fell, 70-62, to the UQAM Citadins in Quebec university basketball league play tonight at the Mitchell Gym. Monplaisir was 7-for-11 from the field and also had four assists in 31 minutes.
UQAM (6-9, 3-3 CIS, 1-0 Quebec) was led by 16 points from Gregory St-amand. Eric CoteKougnima had a doubledouble with 12 points and 11 rebounds. UQAM held a significant edge on the glass, outrebounding Bishop’s 50-35.
In addition to Monplaisir’s 17, Bishop’s got 11 points from Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.), and ten from newcomer Mukiya Post (Victoria, B.C.). Mike Andrews scored eight points and grabbed a teamhigh ten rebounds. Tim Hunter led the Gaiters with five assists before leaving the game in the second quarter with a lower-body injury.
The Gaiters came out strongly, much to the delight of the boisterous crowd of 905, and used an 8-0 run to take a 15-4 lead midway through the first quarter. However, UQAM crept back into the game and cut the margin to 21-17 by the end of the period.
The Gaiters shot 39% from the field, while UQAM was 36.4%. UQAM committed 26 turnovers, to the Gaiters’ 23.
The Gaiters are back in action on Friday, as they visit the Laval Rouge et Or. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
