M-bas­ket­ball: Big third quar­ter leads Con­cor­dia over Gaiters

Fri­day’sAgame: big third quar­ter led the Con­cor­dia Stingers to a 71-59 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Que­bec univer­sity bas­ket­ball league played last Fri­day night at the Con­cor­dia Gym in Montreal. The Stingers led 28-27 at half­time, but broke the game open with a 25-point out­burst in the third frame. Con­cor­dia went on a 13-2 run mid­way through the pe­riod to take a 16-point lead, their largest of the night.

The Gaiters went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 56-49 with six min­utes left, but Con­cor­dia re­sponded with eight unan­swered points to put the game out of reach.

Bishop’s (5-8, 5-5 CIS, 0-3 Que­bec) was led by a ca­reer-high 20 points from Mukiya Post (Vic­to­ria, B.C.). The former Oak Bay Bay went 6-for-16 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. On­nex Black­wood (Scar­bor­ough, Ont.) scored 11 points.

Con­cor­dia (9-6, 8-3 CIS, 3-0 Que­bec) was led by Evens Laroche, who scored 17 points. Kyle Des­marais scored 14 and picked up a game-high nine re­bounds, while Jerome Blake added 11.

The Stingers out­shot Bishop’s 40.9% to 36%, and out­re­bounded the Gaiters 42-40. The Gaiters com­mit­ted 25 turnovers, while Con­cor­dia only made 18.

Sa­tru­day’s game: A thirdquar­ter drought doomed the Bishop’s Gaiters as they fell to the Mcgill Red­men, 67-54, in Que­bec univer­sity bas­ket­ball league played Satur­day night at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters had taken their only lead of the night at 38-37, at 6:06 of the third, but were held score­less through the rest of the pe­riod, as Mcgill led 49-38 af­ter thirty min­utes.

Mcgill led 20-13 af­ter the first quar­ter, but the Gaiters had chipped the lead down to three points, 32-29, by half­time. A three­p­ointer by Sean Mon­plaisir (Toronto, Ont.) capped a 7-1 run over 1:49 early in the third, putting Bishop’s up 38-37. Mcgill scored 12 unan­swered points to put the game away. In the fourth quar­ter, the Gaiters could pull to no closer than four points.

Bishop’s (5-9, 5-6 CIS, 0-4 Que­bec) was led, for the sec­ond straight night, by Mukiya Post (Vic­to­ria, B.C.), who scored 13 points, in­clud­ing a pair of three­p­oint­ers. On­nex Black­wood (Scar­bor­ough, Ont.) was the only other Gaiter in dou­ble fig­ures, with 11 points. Jeremy Leonard-smith (Ot­tawa, Ont.) led Bishop’s with seven points.

The Red­men shot 49% from the field (25-for- 51), while hold­ing the Gaiters to 36% (21-for-58). Mcgill held a slight edge in re­bounds, 34 to 33, and com­mit­ted 22 turnovers to 20 by Bishop’s.

The Gaiters are off for ex­ams, and re­turn to ac­tion af­ter Christ­mas at the Clas­sique des Ci­tadins in Montreal.
