M-basketball: Big third quarter leads Concordia over Gaiters
Friday’sAgame: big third quarter led the Concordia Stingers to a 71-59 win over the Bishop’s Gaiters in Quebec university basketball league played last Friday night at the Concordia Gym in Montreal. The Stingers led 28-27 at halftime, but broke the game open with a 25-point outburst in the third frame. Concordia went on a 13-2 run midway through the period to take a 16-point lead, their largest of the night.
The Gaiters went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 56-49 with six minutes left, but Concordia responded with eight unanswered points to put the game out of reach.
Bishop’s (5-8, 5-5 CIS, 0-3 Quebec) was led by a career-high 20 points from Mukiya Post (Victoria, B.C.). The former Oak Bay Bay went 6-for-16 from the field and 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) scored 11 points.
Concordia (9-6, 8-3 CIS, 3-0 Quebec) was led by Evens Laroche, who scored 17 points. Kyle Desmarais scored 14 and picked up a game-high nine rebounds, while Jerome Blake added 11.
The Stingers outshot Bishop’s 40.9% to 36%, and outrebounded the Gaiters 42-40. The Gaiters committed 25 turnovers, while Concordia only made 18.
Satruday’s game: A thirdquarter drought doomed the Bishop’s Gaiters as they fell to the Mcgill Redmen, 67-54, in Quebec university basketball league played Saturday night at the Mitchell Gym. The Gaiters had taken their only lead of the night at 38-37, at 6:06 of the third, but were held scoreless through the rest of the period, as Mcgill led 49-38 after thirty minutes.
Mcgill led 20-13 after the first quarter, but the Gaiters had chipped the lead down to three points, 32-29, by halftime. A threepointer by Sean Monplaisir (Toronto, Ont.) capped a 7-1 run over 1:49 early in the third, putting Bishop’s up 38-37. Mcgill scored 12 unanswered points to put the game away. In the fourth quarter, the Gaiters could pull to no closer than four points.
Bishop’s (5-9, 5-6 CIS, 0-4 Quebec) was led, for the second straight night, by Mukiya Post (Victoria, B.C.), who scored 13 points, including a pair of threepointers. Onnex Blackwood (Scarborough, Ont.) was the only other Gaiter in double figures, with 11 points. Jeremy Leonard-smith (Ottawa, Ont.) led Bishop’s with seven points.
The Redmen shot 49% from the field (25-for- 51), while holding the Gaiters to 36% (21-for-58). Mcgill held a slight edge in rebounds, 34 to 33, and committed 22 turnovers to 20 by Bishop’s.
The Gaiters are off for exams, and return to action after Christmas at the Classique des Citadins in Montreal.
