Shkimba’s sweet six­teen leads Gaiters over Laval, 72-56

high 16 points by Ri­ley Shkimba (Kingston, Ont.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters over the Laval Rouge et Or, 72-56, in Que­bec univer­sity women’s bas­ket­ball league play at the Mitchell Gym, last Satur­day af­ter­noon. The five-foot-ten sopho­more came off the bench to drain four three-point­ers for the Gaiters, who never trailed in the con­test and picked up their sec­ond win in less than 24 hours.

Bishop’s led from wire to wire, as Laval strug­gled with the Gaiters’ tena­cious de­fence. Bishop’s made a sea­son-high 21 steals, forc­ing the Rouge et Or to com­mit 36 turnovers. The Laval mis­cues turned into 40 of the Gaiters’ 72 points. The Gaiters held leads of 20-9 af­ter the first quar­ter, 32-23 at half­time and 52-39 af­ter three pe­ri­ods.

The Gaiters (9-12, 9-11 CIS, 4-4 Que­bec) also got a strong all-around per­for­mance from fifth-year point guard Jessy Roy (Val d’or, Que.), as she scored 16 points, grabbed a teamhigh six re­bounds and made seven as­sists. Sec­ond- year swing­man Gabrielle Cham­ber­land (Sher­brooke, Que.) was the only other Gaiter in dou­ble fig­ures, with 11 points.

Laval (8-10, 8-10 CIS, 3-5 Que­bec) was led by a dou­ble-dou­ble by MariePas­cale Nadeau (14 points, 11 re­bounds). El­yse Jobin was the only other Rouge et Or player in dou­ble fig­ures, as she scored 11.

The Gaiters re­turn to ac­tion on Fri­day, Jan­uary 27, as they host the Con­cor­dia Stingers at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
