Shkimba’s sweet sixteen leads Gaiters over Laval, 72-56
high 16 points by Riley Shkimba (Kingston, Ont.) led the Bishop’s Gaiters over the Laval Rouge et Or, 72-56, in Quebec university women’s basketball league play at the Mitchell Gym, last Saturday afternoon. The five-foot-ten sophomore came off the bench to drain four three-pointers for the Gaiters, who never trailed in the contest and picked up their second win in less than 24 hours.
Bishop’s led from wire to wire, as Laval struggled with the Gaiters’ tenacious defence. Bishop’s made a season-high 21 steals, forcing the Rouge et Or to commit 36 turnovers. The Laval miscues turned into 40 of the Gaiters’ 72 points. The Gaiters held leads of 20-9 after the first quarter, 32-23 at halftime and 52-39 after three periods.
The Gaiters (9-12, 9-11 CIS, 4-4 Quebec) also got a strong all-around performance from fifth-year point guard Jessy Roy (Val d’or, Que.), as she scored 16 points, grabbed a teamhigh six rebounds and made seven assists. Second- year swingman Gabrielle Chamberland (Sherbrooke, Que.) was the only other Gaiter in double figures, with 11 points.
Laval (8-10, 8-10 CIS, 3-5 Quebec) was led by a double-double by MariePascale Nadeau (14 points, 11 rebounds). Elyse Jobin was the only other Rouge et Or player in double figures, as she scored 11.
The Gaiters return to action on Friday, January 27, as they host the Concordia Stingers at the Mitchell Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
