Suicide is not an option
“Suicide is not an option” is this year’s theme for the 22nd edition of Suicide Prevention Week which runs from February 5th to the 11th. The JEVI suicide prevention centre would like people to add their voice to the declaration of solidarity. “Ajouter ma voix” leaflets will be distributed through publisacs throughout the Townships and signatures can also be added at www.ajoutermavoix.com. The organization is also encouraging people to check out the Facebook page named Semaine de prevention du suicide en Estrie that has been put online specifically for this week. A lot of information will be available there on mental health, suicide prevention and different activities that will be taking place.
In the Estrie region, every week, one person commits suicide. Suicide is not a rational choice nor a completely individual choice. It is also a cultural act, that is, an act committed in a cultural and social context
that tolerates it. It is time to refuse this culture and this tolerance, the time to say: “Suicide is not an option! Here, everyone is important!“It’s a simple sentence to underline the unique and precious place that each person occupies in their entourage and in Quebec society.
Together we can prevent suicide. Each citizen is necessary in the prevention by becoming part of those who reject the option of suicide and that is why they are being invited to affirm this, by ‘adding their voices’, to help bring an end to the suffering.
Suicide prevention week is also the ideal time to publicise local resources. If you believe that someone you know may be going through a very difficult time or contemplating suicide, and you don’t know what to do, you must ask for help. Call 1 866 APPELLE (277-3553) and someone from the
will help you.
