Gaiter alum Katy Ger­main signs with Ger­man pro­fes­sional squad

Ger­main ‘10, a mem­ber of the Bishop’s Gaiters women’s bas­ket­ball team from 2006-11, has signed a pro­fes­sional con­tract with TSV Tow­ers Speyer-schif­fer­stadt of the 2.Bun­desliga, the Ger­man sec­ond di­vi­sion, through the end of the 2011-12 sea­son.

The na­tive of Val d’or, Que., and for­mer Cégep de Sher­brooke Volon­taire, spent five sea­sons with the Gaiters and was named the Bishop’s Univer­sity Fe­male Ath­lete of the Year in 2010. Ger­main was a three-year starter for the Gaiters and was named a Que­bec Univer­sity Bas­ket­ball League First Team All-star in 2009 and 2010. She fin­ished her ca­reer with 707 points in 79 league games, a field goal per­cent­age of 0.342 and a three-point shoot­ing per­cent­age of 0.316.

Ger­main made her pro­fes­sional de­but on Jan­uary 22, scor­ing two points and pick­ing up two re­bounds in 13 min­utes as Speyer lost, 62-59, to TSV Amicitia Viern­heim. The Tow­ers are cur­rently 5-7 in the 2.Bun­desliga South Di­vi­sion, with eight games re­main­ing in their sched­ule. Ger­main is the sec­ond Cana­dian on the team, as she joins Kathryn Ver­boom, who played with the Lake­head Thun­der­wolves of the OUA.

Ger­main is the first Gaiter women’s bas­ket­ball player to play pro­fes­sion­ally since Melissa Le­may, who played in the French league un­til 2008.
